When homeowners of a newly built home nestled in the dunes along the Atlantic Ocean engaged The Todd Group to design and install a landscape that harmonized well with its surroundings, we were up for the challenge. The home was designed by celebrated architect Chris Rice of Rice and Brown Architects, which is known for building and renovating one-of-a-kind homes on the Jersey Shore. The sandy beach and water beyond set the stage, and our charge was to create a landscape that reflects the natural beauty that surrounds it.
The Todd Group’s landscape architect Jeff Higinbotham designed a landscape that simultaneously achieves unassuming luxury and a relaxed, casual ambiance. Given the sandy soil and weather coming off the ocean, we used hearty, durable materials and plants that would withstand the hot and dry beach environment. The palette of bright perennials, flowering shrubs, hosta, lavender, and hydrangea adds color. Even better, these plants flourish in the sandy, quick-draining soil.
Keeping with Rice and Brown’s vision for a classic beach home, The Todd Group installed a pathway that upholds the architectural integrity of this Craftsman home. We used durable black locust wood planks, which offer a timeworn, beachy feel, blending into the natural landscape.
