For The Todd Group, public projects offer the opportunity to showcase our talent to a wider audience who might not normally see it. So, when we were approached to join a team as the planting contractor for a unique new park in Hoboken, New Jersey, we didn’t hesitate. The Todd Group was engaged as the planting contractor, installing the entire landscape for this lovely island park set along one of Hoboken’s historic streets.
The vision was that of award-winning landscape architect Michael Van Valkenburgh. The new park on Pier C along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway in Hoboken, New Jersey, was designed as a destination for families wishing to take in the breathtaking views of Manhattan and enjoy waterfront wildlife and flora.
At the edge of the pier, we created a large lawn dune area for sunbathing, picnicking, and recreation. The planting scheme throughout the park favors coastal species, and we strived to achieve seasonal beauty to enthrall visitors all year long. Trees include skyline honeylocust, which casts a light shade and turns a striking yellow in autumn, as well as golden raintree and lacebark elm. Other perennials include rose of sharon, compact inkberry holly, winterberry, northern bayberry, and willow, all of which we planted in drifts and masses.
For the children, there is so much to enjoy at this river island oasis. A center playground for toddlers is surrounded by gorgeous greenery and shrubs, while the water play area is a fun attraction for children that also offers families an enticing river panorama set against the backdrop of the city skyline.
